James Uhart

Franco-British pianist and composer.
Grew up in Paris then moved to the US to study at Boston’s Berklee College of Music. After graduating lived in New York for six years and worked as a vocal accompanist, a music educator and led a trio, recording nine albums, and accompanying performers such as Gino Sitson and Amy Winehouse.
After eleven years in the US, returned to Europe – now based in Lisbon, Portugal.

About the music:

What interests me are simple ideas that go to unexpected places. Small melodic or harmonic shifts that surprise me. It’s not just something I search for in my own music but also in other people’s.

Then there’s the interaction with other musicians – the conversational quality of improvisation.
Finding a balance between individual and group expression. It doesn’t always work but when it does, feels like having a great conversation.
